really?
the movie function is almost unusable.
No autofocus, why?
mad stripes at low light.
video is deleted when pressing “play” too fast after record
and so on…..
It could be so great with a little firmware tweak.

What? What are you talking about the nikon D90 film mode is great!
January 4th, 2009 at 6:59 am
The movie function is great. You just have to be not lazy. Its a great primer if you want to be a director of photography. Hollywood cameras dont do autofocus either so stop being lazy and learn !
January 15th, 2009 at 10:25 am
if nikon will update firmware there will be no option to activet autofocus during recording of video this is imoposibble because its DSLR and its primary constructed to take pictures and not videos
February 1st, 2009 at 11:52 am
“No autofocus, why?”
Because it is not a toy camera. Auto focus is for noobs.
March 15th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Also, USB Mass Storage Mode. Pleeeease.
March 24th, 2009 at 6:39 am
YEah the D90′s Video is really Great!!
March 26th, 2009 at 2:22 am
Well, now it’s not too late for a firmware upgrade. There are known issues and let’s hope Nikon adresses it. It’s a recession so I’m not gonna jump and buy next Nikon camera just because it has 1080p and no step pixel problems and no flickering waves. I’d rather pay a few bucks to improve D90. So Nikon, what are you waiting for?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
I freakin love the dmovie mode, and I actually prefer the manual focus anyways because it let’s you be alot more versatile. It would be nice if they made an option of manual and auto with 1080p like the 5d mark ii. I have a feeling they are adding that to the d700x
March 29th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
my inglish i s bad i own d90 the movie is great for my use but in low light its has poor quality its grainy like iso 500 on old film cameras.
April 4th, 2009 at 10:41 am
I do agree it has interlaces in low light conditions… But it’s flat 24 FPS…. and manual focus ROCKS… get panavision cameras…. ahhahhaa… I WISH!!…… but seriously…. it’s quite annoying with those interlacing lines…..
April 13th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Light flicker happens with interior light, mostly with fluorescent lights because the capture frequency is not synchronized with light frequency, this doesn’t happen with sunlight or studio lights.
Main problems in my opinion are the rolling shutter effect that bends vertical lines while panning and lack of manual controls such as iso, diaf or shutter speed. Diaf can be solved by using manual lenses though.
take care

Hey guys why cry about the not included things when you can enjoy your life with the thing that are in your hand.
I love my D90. Everythings included are great and awsome.
I enjoy taking photo with 70-200 f/2.8 and love recording videos with 50 f/1.8. why Auto when you can ride it on your own.
May 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I bought D90 to make movie photograph is not nessesally for me so I really want Nikon to stop
that agly flicker and dirty noise!
I will call Nikon tomorrow and tell them my wish
my english is far from perfect but my house is not far from Nikon’s head office!
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Autofocus by nature has nasty pulsing. I’d much rather see manual exposure options on the D90.
June 4th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
“Because it is not a toy camera. Auto focus is for noobs.”
So I guess you switch off the AF when shooting stills? Good for you. Nothing beats the thrill of missing a shot while being a purist….
June 6th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
don’t use the video mode laaa… it is totally rubbish….
i’m the one who d90 user actually never use the LIVE VIEW because it seriously can spoilt your lense…
So, if you want to take any live movie, just buy a new handycam laaaa…
DSLR is not suitable for videography….
CIOA!!!

Umm, hello?! Canon has updated the firmware on the 5D Mark II for it to be autofocus?! Heard you can actually control things like aperture too. When will Nikon follow suit?
August 18th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Nikon got there first, Canon played catch-up but then overtook them. Don’t know why, not sure anyone does.
The 5D Mark II is over twice the price of the D90 and is much closer to ‘pro’ quality, so it makes sense for Canon to address these issues for their target market and for the next-gen Eos 1.
Just a shame that Nikon seem content to rest on their laurels and not fix these niggles ahead of their own 2010 model launches.
And Live View damages lenses? This is a new one on me. I suppose, coming from someone who signs off with a mis-spelt 4-letter word none of us should take the comment too seriously, eh?
Ciao!
September 2nd, 2009 at 6:15 am
I will be happy if they add AF fine tune to the firmware. Why? The D90 has Focus issues let user fix it themself instead of sending the body and lens back to Nikon for adjustments.
September 2nd, 2009 at 7:34 am
I wrote a mail to Nikon, asking them if they plan to release a firmware update…
The answer was clear : no update planned…
There’s a petition, please sign it : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/control-the-d90
Probably useless but…

intervalmeter in firmware update would be great seeing that nikon do not make one for this model
October 11th, 2009 at 2:23 am
The D90 is very versatile. Yes, you don’t have shutter control in DMovie mode and it is not totally manual because of this. But when you have control of the light, strap on a prime lens and it produces stunning images…especially for the price tag. I was using so much for wedding shoots I went out and got the D5000 to give to my second shooter. The swivel lcd is great for shooting video.
October 15th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
I own one of these cameras and they are great. The Nikon D90 is me and my wife’s first DSLR camera.
October 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
All you “pros” who praise the video quality on D90, you need to get yours eyes checked. I wonder why you folks are even taking photos with this expensive camera if you are not able to see what quality is. D90 is an awesome camera for photos. Video mode should be dropped to lower the price. It is USELESS, neither quality nor functionality. Try panning while filming and tell me if the distortion is also present in movies done by the Hollywood cameras you all love to mention so much. My goodness, go get yourselves glasses or something. Just because a car has a Ferrari logo on it doesn’t mean every single bolt in it is made of gold!

“intervalmeter in firmware update would be great seeing that nikon do not make one for this model”
I second this – lack of one is basically forcing me to upgrade to the D300s (oh darn) – the wired Intervalometers you can buy work… ok…
November 19th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Peter said : “get yours eyes checked [...] try panning while filming and tell me if the distortion is also present in movies done by the Hollywood cameras you all love to mention so much”
this is complete rubbish. distortion has nothing to do with video mode whatsoever… Try a better lens. get your brain checked.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
The video mode is an absolute steaming pile of dog excrement …. compared to a HD camcorder…
But…
You will catch something when you don’t have the camcorder handy… I don’t think anyone gets the D90 just to take videos, if they do they need their heads examined.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Huh? D90 video mode is fantastic in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. The quality is much better than any HD camcorder I’ve owned. It’s certainly not as easy to use, but if you have the patience to learn, you’d see that it is more than worthy.
And that seems to be the governing point. User-side issues. Sigh…
November 23rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
I’ve got a D300 for photos, and I’ve bought a D90 especially for the video mode. I also have 3 lenses (24-70 f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 & superangular 10-20 f/4-5.6) I shoot videos too (music vides to be more precise) and this camera is great nontheless.
Of course that you’ll need some tripod / dolly gear, but the image and the DOF are great.
BUT as some of you mentioned before, in low / fluorescent light, that banding due to fluorescent light is terrible, and I expect that nikon is going to release the new firmware for this problem. After that, everything will be great.
So please nikon, do your job and respect your clientel
November 25th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
I love my D90. Its head and tails above my D70. Good job Nikon! Now, if I could just afford some prime lenses (70-210; 50mm, etc.).
November 30th, 2009 at 9:02 am
Brent, ofcourse the 70-210 is not a prime.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I have never known anything take this long to get its first firmware update. Im guessing Nikon are moving on.
January 6th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Just out of topic a little, can anyone tell me is it a normal thing for the camera to have slight delay when press the shutter button? My D90 didnt just snap the pics, it will have like 0.2 sec before the shutter is closed and open again. at most of the times even under bright sunlight., i would have to tell my subject to stay static. even when i change the lens to 50mm 1.8 af. i usually use A or S setting but even when i change it to fully auto modes, it still happen. its a nightmare somehow. I really hope my D90 will be like others which with 1 click, i will get the result straight away.
January 8th, 2010 at 2:49 am
1) Watch this video which was shot with nikon d90
2) appreciate the video mode of d90 in the hands of someone who knows how to use it.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:14 am
Tom: just noticed your post. Do you have your camera set to “Exposure Delay Mode”? This is setting d10 in the custom setting menu. Unless you want to reduce blur on a tripod (really only for macro work) then set this to “Off”. The default setting should be “off”.
January 23rd, 2010 at 6:15 am
Saw the autofocus in movie mode in Canon’s latest digital rebel D500 or something like that. It’s pretty nasty. I would go with the D90′s manual focus for movie. Autofocus adds unwanted motor sound to the movie during the focus. Hate it!

What needs to happen is canon post online 1week for all nikon D90 users come to 20 locations in the USA and trade in there D90′s for a new mark 2 or 1d Nikon a get up off there asses then. We will be waiting another 10 years for a update for the D90 and it will not ever come…….
February 22nd, 2010 at 10:48 am
sinistro, why on earth would you or anyone else for that matter, buy a D90 just for video? it doesn’t make sense. video mode is limited because it’s prime function is a stills camera. surely no one serious about making video would ever consider this over a proper HD camcorder.
DORKS! LOL
March 11th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
I agree buying a D90 just for video mode is insane to say the least, it’s first and foremost a DSLR Camera that Nikon decided to add bling to. It’s a decent video camera in a pinch with great HD quality, however, with it’s limitations (including Jellocam and video tearing even in daylight) it won’t replace a good HD video camera any time soon. I also have to agree with the focus thing, learning how to manual focus while shooting video will pay off in spades later on
I am having problems with auto focus on stills with any lens which i’m thinking is a firmware problem like the D300…an update might help with the Jemmocam and video tearing issue as well…so patiently I wait
March 19th, 2010 at 1:09 am
D90 rocks for those who know a little about DSLR photography and want to learn more. It is mainly meant to take photos.
Video Mode is just another option, and for the Price we pay for the d90, i think that its an amazing camera.

I own a number of different camera’s. My D90 is for family, pets. Holidays etc. A really great camera with the added functionality of being able to shoot some great short “HOME” videos.
The video function is an added benefit (1st DSLR camera to offer this) and by no means the purpose of the camera. Comparing a $1000 camera to a $50 000 Hollywood film studio device is just plain stupid.
Firmware upgrade would be great for some of the other small bugs on the camera.

Truly nice post, I really liked looking through it. It had quite a few wonderful information and facts. I am bookmarking this web site.
May 14th, 2010 at 3:41 pm
I have bought a D90 in New York…I want know a simple thing: what is it the actual D90 firmware? I see in many sites that it is possible to use the same update at D80 firmware, but I am not so sure. My firmware is A:1,00 – B:1,00 – L:1,000.
I have a problem with a lens SIGMA 24-70 f 2,8 HSM new, and before to do 400 km to give my lens and camera in reparetion, I would know if it is only a problem of firmware..
