Testing the Nikon D90 digital SLR camera:

the D90 as a possible successor to the D80 was a rumor in the air. They have had to spend two years before the Nikon D90 is a reality. From the first moment we had our hands on the Nikon D90, we had to find the differences in design. There have been minor adjustments in this area with more clear and sharp curves, confirming that no doubt is the new Nikon digital SLR. Naturally, the main changes are inside the camera. Here, Nikon has changed many things for the Nikon D90 can connect with the new range of digital SLR brand with the D300, D700 and D3.

Nikon D90 Digital SLR Camera 12.3 Megapixels

First, we have a different image sensor. While the Nikon D80 had a 10.2 Megapixel CCD sensor, the Nikon D90 incorporates 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor for new development. This is an important fact, since Nikon says that in combination with the Nikon EXPEED processor, this sensor can provide some benefits in high ISO at the D300. In addition, the monitor on the back has been renewed. Along with the vast improvement in size to 3 inches instead of 2.4, the quality up to VGA resolution improved significantly improves the reproduction of the LCD.

Live View is integrated into the Nikon D90

Naturally, we have at our disposal the Live View function, a feature until recently unthinkable in a digital SLR, which has now become indispensable. Nikon has taken a step in the integration of Live View, and has implemented a way that could become a standard for future generations of digital SLR cameras, video mode. For purists, it is a heresy, however. There is no brake on the process of innovation. This mode makes the Nikon D90 digital SLR in the world’s first to offer the ability to capture videos as 720p HDTV. The only lasted a short time, responded quickly with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Testing the Nikon D90, including a DIWA Lab test

In short, the Nikon D90 is equipped with the latest technology, combined with innovations from the higher segment of Nikon. However, the D90 is not market-oriented semipro but amateur market. The handling of the Nikon D90 has become so simple as possible to ensure that beginners or photographers not too experienced to work with the camera and its menus quickly and effortlessly. We were able to use and test the camera in practice and in addition, the Nikon D90 has been tested extensively at the technical level in our DIWA Lab Both tests are in the review of the Nikon D90.

Next week Nikon in expected to release a new firmware update for the Nikon D90, not too many improvements, but any are always welcome:

Some interface improvements

Also an ISO tweak.

Improvement in the d-movie compression blue channel’s compression is too high), there will be a compression rate selector within the menu

Although there’s nothing that done about the Jello Video thing, sorry to hear about that but It’s a hardware problem, that will stay be there even in the next couple of generations of SLR with video capabilities.

As you can see this new Firmware for the Nikon D90 doesn’t improve things a whole lot but a new firmware release so soon after the release shows that Nikon is taking care of the Nikon D90 owners.

The quality and benefits of an SLR camera next to benefit more typical of the compact. This is what we found in the Nikon D90, a camera that excites equal to professional users only. Not surprisingly, is the first reflex model that can record video in HD, something that is likely to see soon with other manufacturers.

The Nikon D90 is aimed, above all, no professional photographer but that does not conform with a compact and prefer the versatility of SLR, but who wants to use it in any situation, hence the addition of video recording and a good number of automatic modes, to lend a picture to be just point and shoot.

The sensor of the Nikon D90 is a CMOS APS-C format and offers a resolution of 12.3 megapixels. Accompanying an image processing system EXPEEDTM, offering bright colors and a low level of noise at different ISO, which in this camera range from 200 to 3200, although we can force it to ISO 100 and ISO 6400.

In the sensor also incorporates a cleaning system, which removes dust particles that may have been cast in the internal filter to change lenses.

The response time of the D90 is very low, with a power of 0.15 milliseconds and a shutter response of 65 milliseconds, so we do not lose any picture because of the camera. He is able also to perform up to 4.5 frames per second.

Nikon D90

One way is the automatic that allows the recognition of scenes, which measures the color and brightness at all times and automatically adjusts exposure, white balance and focus. It was also incorporates a method of face detection, capable of looking up to five faces. To verify that the portraits have been perfect, while we are seeing the picture we can zoom automatically to the faces, we were set on display screen to check the perfect approach.

The auto of the Nikon D90 offers 11 focus points, allowing use different modes: auto at a single point to static objects, dynamic autofocus for moving objects, and 3d-tracking, when we want to keep the focus on an object but change the composition.

Once the photograph will have an editor to make changes in this, being able to apply various color filters, adjust the aberration of the lens, rotarlas slightly in case we have left twisted or apply a Fish Eye.

But one of the highlights of the Nikon D90 is the ability to record movies in HD, with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at 24 frames per second. The video is stored in files in AVI format M-JPEG and the camera has an HDMI output with which we can display in televisions and high-resolution monitors.

The screen behind the camera has a size of 3 inches and offers a resolution of nearly one megapixel, something very useful given that it has implemented the role LiveView, which makes the camera viewfinder, as they do the compact. The display, by the way, has a viewing angle of 170 degrees, so that we can use it and view it in any position.

The battery of the Nikon D90 will not disappoint us, because thanks to a new system that reduces energy consumption, will get up to 850 shots with one load, I imagine that the use LiveView or without the video recording, but it also quite impressive.

Nikon D90

Although the camera can be purchased only with the body apart and adding lenses will be put up for sale a kit with two, including a lens Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105 mm, which offers a zoom of 5.8 increases. This lens, which incorporates the auto engine with a silent mode, has an image stabilization system with which, according to the manufacturer, we can use shutter speeds up to three times lower than in other cameras. In Xataka picture we have all its features.

The price of the body of the Nikon D90 is around at 1000 dollars, which will be translated into Euro 1000 when he arrives here, while the kit lens will cost 1300 U.S. dollars.

Additionally, it puts up for sale on the Nikon novimebre GP-1, a GPS receiver compatible with this model that allows the automatic geolocation of the photographs taken with the camera, saving longitude, latitude and altitude in the metadata of the image.

Acording to Nikon’s press release the D90 is a:

“digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera that redefines the creative boundaries of digital photography allowing photographers to easily create stunning still images and High Definition (HD) movie clips with sound”

Among the new features that the press release highlights are:

“Borrowed from Nikon’s professional line of digital cameras, the D90 is the most affordable camera to include Nikon’s Scene Recognition System and adds newly-developed advanced Face Detection technology”

According to some reviews this feature, takes the process of taking semi professional pictures a step beyond in quality and effectiveness. All this features were included in more professional models before so Nikon is counting on the increase of interest in semi professional photography by household users.

Ever since the first DLSR showed up in the scene everybody has wondered why they were not able to record video, some purists likes it that way but in this case Nikon again is betting on the average family user with an increased interest in photography including this feature as the breakthrough characteristic of this model.

Nikon D90 movie capabilities

“For the first time in digital SLR photography, Nikon introduces the addition of the D-Movie mode, allowing consumers to create their own HD movie clips (1280 x 720) with sound from their D-SLR camera. Photographers will appreciate the cinematic qualities that come from the 24fps frame rate, which matches theatrical film,”

Apart from That the Nikon D90 also includes some fancy tweaks that for sure will spark the creativeness of the most unimaginative user:

New Distortion Control: Adjusts the annoying lens aberration

Straighten picture: This feature helps to correct linear inclination of an image for straight horizons and landscapes, no more crooked photos

Fisheye Effect: In camera filter produces optical effects similar to a fisheye lens.

A rule of Thumb for every gadget is that just when you finally decide to buy one and start feeling comfortable using most of it’s capabilities then a new and better model of the same brand is released. It’s not different in this case with Nikon D80 and the new Nikon D90, though the Niko D80 digital camera has been in the market for quite some time already (in digital terms) none of it features seem outdated, the photos still look sharp and great, the body still feels sleek and modern and the semi-professionals who use it are not missing the video capabilities that Nikon’s D80′s younger brother (Nikon D90) has.

If you want to know if it’s really worth updating your “old” Nikon D80 for the new D90 you will have to judge it yourself. Here are the main differences between the nikon D80 and the Nikon D90:

Effective pixels

D90: 12.3 million
D80: 10.2 million

Not enough to make your money worth.

D80 and D90 Sensor

D90: CMOS sensor, 23.6 x 15.8 mm; total pixels: 12.9 million; Nikon DX format
D80: RGB CCD, 23.6 x 15.8 mm, 10.75 million total pixel; Nikon DX format

Here stives one of the main differences between the two.

Image size in the D80 and in the D90 in pixels

D90: DX Format 4,288 x 2,848 [L], 3,216 x 2,136 [M], 2,144 x 1,424 [S]
D80: (3,872 x 2,592) / M (2,896 x 1,944) / S (1,936 x 1,296)

Both big enough to make nice large posters, the Nikon D90 will just be sharper.

Sensitivity

D90: ISO 200 to 3200 in steps of 1/3 EV, can also be set to approx. 0.3, 0.7 or 1 EV
D80: to 1600 (ISO equivalent) in steps of 1/3 EV, plus HI-0.3, HI-0.7 and HI-1

Here the Nikon D90 will allow you to take better pictures under worse lighting conditions

Screen

D90: 3-in., approx. 920,00-dot (VGA), 170-degree viewing angle, approximately. 100% frame coverage
D80: 2.5-in., 230,000-dot

Half an inch never gave more! what can I say.

Exposure modes

D90: Auto modes (auto, auto [flash off]), Advanced Scene Modes (Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Close-up, Night Portrait), programmed auto with flexible program, shutter-priority auto, aperture-priority auto (A), manual (M)
D80: Digital Vari-Program (Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Macro Close up, Sports, Night Landscape, Night Portrait), Programmed Auto flexible program; Shutter-Priority Auto [S]; Aperture Priority Auto [A]; Manual [M]

Nikon D80 and D90 weight

D90: Approx. 620 g
D80: Approx. 585g

A sliker camera yet a heavier one

Video Capabilities of the Nikon D90

The new Nikon D90 is among the first D-SLRs to be able to capture high-def video, being able to capture video with any lens or any setting defined in the camera which in itself is a breakthrough change in the Digital SLR.
